WICHITA — For five of her six years competing in track and field, Emily Aikins had Jackie Hall as her head coach. A year ago Aikins competed at the 2010 Kansas state track meet for Jayhawk-Linn High School.
Back at Uniontown High for her senior season, Aikins qualified for the 2011 Kansas All-Class State Track and Field Championships.
She was in the Class 3A 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in Wichita Friday and Saturday.
“It’s great. I hadn’t medaled for Coach Hall before now and I’m glad I could do it today,” Aikins said while looking at the seventh-place medal from the Class 3A girls’ 100-meter dash Saturday.
“She was my coach for five years starting in junior high.”
Aikins ran in Friday’s 200-meter dash preliminaries, recording a time of 27.91 seconds. That put her sixth in her heat and did not advance her to Saturday’s 200 finals in Class 3A.
The first races contested Saturday morning were the 100-meter preliminaries. Aikins ran a 13.20 to qualify for the finals later in the day. Aikins ran her final 100-meter dash of her high school career in 13.18 seconds claiming her medal.
“It means a lot to medal my senior year. I took seventh in the (Class 2A) long jump last year competing for Jayhawk-Linn. When I came back to Uniontown, we were in 3A and I’m happy to finish the season like this,” Aikins said.
Uniontown High sophomore Trenton Miller competed in his second state meet in the discus — last year in Class 2A and this year in Class 3A.
On Friday, Miller was 11th in the 3A discus event with a throw of 134 feet, 1 inch.
